Anti-coagulant prescription medication Xarelto (Rivaroxaban), manufactured and marketed by Janssen Pharmaceutical and Bayer Healthcare, is approved for use in preventing blood clotting in stroke patients who have nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, treating deep vein thrombosis (blood clots within the body), treating pulmonary embolism (blood clots in lungs), reducing the risk of DVT or PE, post-surgical DVT prevention after knee or hip replacements.
Xarelto has been marketed as a more convenient alternative to Warfarin. Xarelto also filled a void previously held by Coumadin and Pradaxa.
Recent lawsuits allege these companies failed to warn patients and physicians of the increased risks of irreversible and fatal internal bleeding when using Xarelto. The most serious potential side effect, complication and risk caused by Xarelto is severe internal bleeding that can result in death. Other injuries can include infection, decreased hemoglobin (a substance that carries oxygen in red blood cells); cerebrovascular accidents (an event that leads to a cerebral hemorrhage); hematoma (a semisolid mass in the blood); peripheral edema (swelling of the lower limbs); and dyspnea (difficulty breathing).
Xarelto is more dangerous than traditional blood thinners because no antidote exists to reverse its blood-thinning effects.
The attorneys at Murray Guari are investigating potential lawsuits on behalf of clients who were prescribed the blood thinning medication Xarelto (Rivaroxaban), and suffered serious bleeding events.
