Did you know that one of the most dangerous vehicles on the road in terms of rollover today are highly commonly used by schools, day care centers, hotels, churches and senior centers? These are commonly known as 15-passenger vans and there are more than 500,000 currently on the road today. If a 15-passenger van is filled with over 15 people it has a 70% chance of rollover.
15-passenger vans have a high propensity to roll over during emergency maneuvers as they are manufactured top heavy, and with a high center of gravity, and have weak rear extensions. The design of these vans is also not conducive to handling side impacts and many injuries and deaths attributed to these larger vans were the result of passenger ejection.
Public Citizen, a non-profit public interest group, reported that between the years 1990-2000, a total of 864 occupants died in 15-passenger van crashes with almost half occurring in single vehicle rollover crashes. They also continue to pressure General Motors, Ford and Daimler Chrysler to offer the same retrofit packages ($300-$400) that have been provided on pick-up trucks for years, which could improve van safety.
