Risperdal (Risperidone), manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Janssen
Pharmaceuticals Inc., is a powerful anti-psychotic medication approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism; however, Risperdal has been linked to severe side effects, especially when it is prescribed to children or elderly for “off-label” disorders that are not approved by the FDA.
In addition to its promotion of “off-label use”, Johnson & Johnson also faces issues due to its illegal and deceptive marketing practices of Risperdal, the making of false claims and the failure to adequately warn about the drugs possible side effects. In November 2013, The U.S. Department of Justice announced a $2.2 billion settlement to be paid to state and federal entities and $1.27 billion for civil fines and restitution.
Risperdal is associated with a condition called Gynecomastia, in which young males develop breast tissue (male breasts) as a result of production of the hormone prolactin. They also experience pain or nipple discharge, often requiring liposuction or the surgical procedure, a mastectomy. They also experience significant emotional and psychological damage due to the embarrassment of the appearance of breasts.
Risperdal is also associated with a high risk of death among elderly people with dementia-related psychosis. It was often prescribed for the off-label use in the treatment of psychosis, aggression, agitation and behavioral disorders in dementia patients.
Patients who take Risperdal may also experience the following side effects:
- Diabetes, blood sugar disorders (hyperglycemia)
- Neurological problems
- Heart conditions
- Tardive Dyskinesia (involuntary movements of face, and tongue)
- Pituitary tumors
- Weight gain
The attorneys at Murray Guari are investigating potential lawsuits on behalf patients who have taken the atypical antipsychotic drug Risperdal and suffered from Gynecomastia or it many other dangerous side effects.
