Over 18 Years of Helping Clients when they need It Most
The product liability attorneys of Murray Guari Trial Attorneys are investigating alleged claims against manufacturers of Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filters.
An Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filter, manufactured by Cook Medical Inc., C.R. Bard, Cordis Corporation, and Boston Scientific, is a spider-like wire inserted into this vein in patients who are at high risk of a pulmonary embolism (a blockage in one of the arteries in the lungs). IVC’s are temporarily used to prevent blood clots. They were developed to “catch” blood clots before they reach the right atrium of the heart.
IVC Filter recipient’s claim that the IVC Filter breaks inside patients where metal parts move through the body damaging the heart, lungs and causing internal bleeding. Recipients accuse IVC Filter manufacturers of negligence, failure to warn of risks, and designing and manufacturing defective devices.
Alleged side effects and injuries from the use of IVC Filters can include:
In May 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Safety Communication regarding removal of retrievable inferior vena cava (IVC) filters. The FDA recommending that retrievable filters be removed “as soon as protection from pulmonary embolism is no longer needed.” Data published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders recommends removal between 29 and 54 days after implantation.
In 2015, the New England Society for Vascular Surgery reported a 31 percent fracture rate in IVC Filters, while the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine calculated that 40 percent of all IVC Filters will fracture within five and a half years of being implanted.
