Essure is manufactured by Bayer as a form of permanent birth control (hysteroscopic sterilization procedure). In 2016, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) required a new “black box warning” label for Essure – “designed to call attention to serious or life-threatening risks.” The FDA also called upon Bayer to conduct surveillance that will assess “risks of the device in a real-world environment.” THE FDA will use the results of that study to “determine what, if any, further actions related to Essure are needed to protect public health.”
