Over 18 Years of Helping Clients when they need It Most
Unfortunately, Florida does not require private passenger car owners to carry Bodily Injury (BI) liability insurance. An estimated one-third of all cars on the road have no Bodily Injury Liability coverage! Should Florida drivers pay for bodily injury protection? – Yes; especially if you do not carry Uninsured Motorist Coverage/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM).
Florida law currently only requires drives to carry two types of automobile insurance – property damage liability protection (no fault insurance) at a minimum of $10,000 and personal injury protection at $10,000. This means insurance companies do often not cover serious injuries because drivers aren’t required to pay for bodily injury protection.
Bodily Injury Liability coverage pays for serious and permanent injury or death to others when you cause a crash involving your automobile. Your insurance company will pay for injuries up to the limits of your policy and provide legal representation for you if you get sued. In particular, your company pays for injuries caused by you or members of your family who live with you, even if they were driving someone else’s vehicle. It may also cover others who drive your automobile with your permission. This coverage also provides you with legal defense in the event you are sued by the injured party.
Are you adequately insured? Many people buy the minimum amount of insurance coverage to protect themselves as required by law and are often told or led to believe it is adequate t by the insurance agent or insurance company. Unfortunately, many insured’s do not realize that the minimum amount of insurance coverage they have, many actually not be enough – often finding out too late, after an accident. Be very careful to examine your present insurance coverage to make sure that you understand exactly what you have and do not have.
