Mirena IUD

Birth Control Side Effects & Brain Injuries

IUD Intra Uterine Device written in notebook on white tableThe product liability attorneys of Murray Guari Trial Attorneys are investigating claims against the Mirena IUD for allegedly concealing the dangerous risk of Pseudotumor Cerebri (PTC) associated with product use.

Mirena IUD, manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, is a small, T-shaped intrauterine device (IUD) inserted into the uterus for long-term pregnancy prevention (birth control). Mirena IUD is a long-action, hormone-releasing (synthetic progesterone levonorgestrel) form of birth control and is also marketed for treating heavy periods.

According to instructions, the Mirena IUD insert can be left in the uterus for up to five years, at which time it needs to be removed. The device is recommended for women who already have at least one child.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Mirena IUD in 2000. Since it became available women using the Mirena IUD claim they have experienced the following:

  • Pseudotumor Cerebri (PTC) or Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH)
  • Uterine perforation
  • Migration or expulsion of IUD
  • Amenorrhea
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Miscarriage
  • Infertility
  • Ovarian Cysts
  • Pelvic infection or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Claims allege that Bayer failed to warn consumers of the dangerous side effects and complications, they engaged in false and deceptive marketing and advertising, they knowingly produced, sold and distributed a defective product, and failed to provide adequate warnings, instructions and issue a recall once information regarding issues became known. This led the FDA to release a Warning Letter to Bayer in 2009 demanding that Bayer should immediately stops its marketing program known as ‘Mirena parties’, and that Bayer “overstates the efficacy of Mirena, presents unsubstantiated claims, minimizes the risks of using Mirena, and includes false or misleading presentations regarding Mirena.”
