Garage Safety – Not So Hidden Dangers
Many of us have a garage and for some it becomes the holding place for things you do not know where to put. While used multiple times in a day, very few people give safety a second thought.
Think about what is in your garage today. In addition to your automobile, you could find sharp tools, toxic and flammable substances, insecticides, fertilizers, paint, and even gasoline. Not to mention items that could fall off a shelf or ones that someone could trip on. Even your garage door, which can weigh as much as 300 pounds or more, can cause serious injury if installed improperly, used wrong or if it malfunctions.
This is not only dangerous for adults but could be tragic for an unsupervised child. Many of these injuries include poisonings, fractures, crushings, amputations, head injuries, burns, or even death.
Here are some tips garage safety tips so you can protect your family and prevent a possible tragedy:
- Install a carbon monoxide alarm in your home
- Teach children that the garage door and garage door opener are not toys
- Keep garage door opener transmitters and remotes out of the reach of children
- Keep tools, chemicals, and paint in locked cabinets out of the reach of children
- Keep the floors clean of clutter to avoid tripping hazards
- Properly store flammable items
- Never stand or walk under a moving garage door
- Never leave children or pets unattended in the garage
