Danger Ahead
Traffic Deaths Increasing in 2015
2015 is on track to be the deadliest for drivers since 2007. According to data from the National Safety Council, traffic fatalities are up 14% so far this year.
The report shows that there were more than 18,600 motor-vehicle deaths from January through June this year, compared to 16,400 deaths in the first six months of 2014. Not to mention the nearly 2.3 million “serious injuries” sustained that required medical attention – a 30% increase from 2014. The costs of those accidents – including medical expenses, wage and productivity losses and property damage – have increased 24% in the same period.
Common causes attributing to the increase are lower gas prices, increased miles traveled, speeding, alcohol impairment and distracted driving to name a few.
Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council reminds all drivers to,”Be a defensive driver and make safe decisions behind the wheel. Your life really depends on it.”
