Grilling & BBQ Safety Tips
Summer is here and grilling season is upon us. Whether using an open fire, gas grill or charcoal grill, the attorneys at Murray Guari want to make sure you are safe.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, gas grills constitute a higher risk of fires, having been involved in an annual average of 7,200 home fires in 2007-2011, while charcoal or other solid-fueled grills were involved in an annual average of 1,400 home fires
Grills fires can ignite in an instant, leading to serious injury, death, or devastating property damage. Mechanical failure or malfunction is by far the leading ignition factor for grill fires. Below are some tips to help you prevent BBQ related-injuries this summer:
- Never leave your grill unattended
- Choose the right location – away from children, away from flammable objects and in well-ventilated areas
- Follow manufacturer instructions when using grill
- Maintain and keep your grill clean – free from debris and grease
- Be prepared to put out a fire – have an extinguisher nearby and know how to use it
- Wear proper clothing – protect your body and feet while cooking
- Prevent burns by using proper cooking tools – hand mitts, long tongs, and spatulas
- Do not overload grill – protect yourself from grease flare-ups
