West Palm Beach, FL – Jason Guari and Scott Murray, partners in the law firm of Murray & Guari, are holding its 1st annual Blood Drive for the Florida Blood Centers on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, from 11am to 5pm (Corner of Flagler Drive and LA Kirksey). Their goal is to get 50 donors to give blood.
They seek not only to obtain blood donations from the public, their friends and supporters, but also to continue to raise awareness for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, a national organization that provides critical research of these diseases and programs for those afflicted and their families.
“Two years ago my wife Nicole was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) a dormant blood cancer that was brought on by a pregnancy,” commented Jason Guari. “We lost our unborn child and Nicole endured many weeks of hospital stays, months of treatment and chemotherapy, and a re-lapses, but I’m happy to say she is in remission and we are positive and hopeful for a “complete remission” in which there must be no evidence of the disease in the blood or marrow at least five years after the initial diagnosis.”
APL is a type of leukemia which is a malignant disease (cancer) affecting the bone marrow and blood,” stated Pam Payne, Executive Director of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “This type of cancer can get worse quickly if not treated. Often these individual’s receive chemotherapy but they are also in need of live saving blood transfusions.”
“Nicole would not have survived if it hadn’t been for her will to beat the cancer and for the kindness of the many volunteers ? strangers – who gave blood, added Guari. “People don’t always realize what an amazing gift it is. It is something that is easy to do, it’s not painful and doesn’t take much time ? yet it saves lives.”
To encourage people to come and donate blood, the law firm is offering all sorts of treats and giveaways. Donors will be given complimentary beverages and snacks.
In addition, everyone who donates is entered in a drawing for one of several raffle prizes, including golf foursomes, gift certificates to local restaurants and an iPod shuffle. Other gifts have been donated by various friends of the firm, and will be given away by random drawing.
“We hope everyone will consider donating blood and joining our effort to help those who so greatly need this life-saving gift,” said Scott Murray.
Trish Lowry Business Development Director of Florida’s Blood Centers says. “Our blood centers are very low on donations and are always looking for donors.” Trish continued:
- Five percent of the population donates blood for a staggering 60 percent who will need it during their lifetime.
- At least 1,500 donors per day are needed to fulfill the needs of patients that the Florida Blood Centers serve.
- Five different blood products are derived from a single donation – white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, plasma and a clotting factor – which are useful in treating cancer, anemia, hemophilia, burns, trauma and other conditions.
We wish more members of the business community would get involved in this way. This is a great opportunity for all three organizations and we are happy to be partnering with Murray Guari on the blood drive.”
The Blood Bank bus will be at the intersection of Flagler Drive and LA Kirsey beside the law offices of Murray Guari located at 1525 N. Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach on February 6, 2008, from 11am to 4pm. For more information on this blood drive or to make an appointment, call Florida’s Blood Centers at 561-845-2323.
