New Study Shows Motorcycle Accidents Have Doubled

West Palm Beach, FL – The Governors Highway Safety Association released the results of an in-depth and interesting study that compared the laws governing motorcycle riding between states. Murray Guari Trial Attorneys, P.L, a personal injury and motorcycle accident law firm in West Palm Beach, FL, believes educating its clients and consumers is the only way to prevent these accidents.

Throughout the country, the number of motorcycle deaths increased from 2,110 in 1997 to 4,810 in 2006, which was the most recent year that provided data. However, the number of deaths in Florida was 3,374 – meaning that accidents in Florida accounted for almost three-quarters of motorcycle deaths in the U.S.

“There is absolutely no reason to ride a motorcycle without a helmet or the proper safety equipment,” said Scott Murray of Murray Guari. “We have seen unnecessary accidents and fatalities as a result of motorcycle accidents, and a cyclist can greatly reduce their chances of injury or death just by taking the simple precaution of wearing a helmet.”

The study cited the lack of universal helmet laws and the enforcement of the laws are part of the problem. While 27 states have mandatory helmet laws, Florida does not. Additionally, Florida hosts a large number of motorcycle riders and owners due to the year-round riding weather and roads.

Motorcycle accidents are a major priority for the Florida State Safety Office, as motorcycle accidents accounted for 17 percent of motor vehicle fatalities, despite the fact that only eight percent of the registered vehicles in the state are motorcycles. The popularity of motorcycles and the number of registered motorcycles is also increasing, but regardless of the number of vehicles on the road, riders need to put safety as their No. 1 priority.
