For those who have children who ride bicycles to school, there are a few important safety issues that should be addressed before school starts. First, make sure your child has a helmet that fits and meets safety guidelines such as those by ASTM or Snell. Second, make sure your child has his or her tires properly inflated. Third, make sure he or she knows the rules of the road, such as stopping at stop signs.  Fourth, advise your child of safety issues, such as riding with someone on the handle bars.

For those who have children who ride the bus, there are a few safety items for them as well. First, always wait a safe distance from the roadway while awaiting the arrival of the school bus. Second, when the school bus does arrive, wait for it to come to a complete stop before approaching the bus. Third, when crossing the street near the school bus, wait until the driver signals that it is safe to cross as the bus driver or traffic may not be at a complete stop.
