Time to Replace Your Comfy Kicks
By: Scott Perry
One of the nicest things about living in Florida is that the weather allows people to wear almost any type of shoe they want year round, whether it’s flip-flops/sandals to boots. This fact usually means that we develop our “favorite” pair of shoes or maybe even a favorite or two. As such, we wear those shoes daily or close to it. Where is the problem you might ask? Well the problem is shoes get worn-out.
The picture below shows that the shoes, while probably comfortable, have little to no tread left.
The problems here are two fold. First, when you have little to no tread you have little to no grip on your shoes. This means whether a floor is wet or just slippery you are more likely to slip and fall then if you have good tread on your shoes. In Florida, with all of the rain we have throughout the year this is fact holds even more true as stores do not always have mats at the entrance to help alleviate the tracking of water, a slippery substance. Second, if you do fall and are injured the premises owner/insurance company are going to seek to blame you (at least partially) for the fall.
This means that if instead of the premises owner being 100% responsible, a jury might find that you are 10, 20, 50%, etc. responsible for your injuries.
Therefore, it is important especially from a safety standpoint, but also from a potential recovery standpoint, to make sure that your shoes are in good condition.
If you or a loved one have been injured due to a slip and fall, consult an attorney to help protect you and fight for your rights.
