Auto Insurance – Don’t Put Price Over Coverage Needs

West Palm Beach, FL – As consumers, we are bombarded with advertising from insurance companies about how they can save us money. The truth is insurance companies only want to sell us the bare minimum required by the state, which often does not provide adequate insurance protection.

While a new study from InsuranceQuotes.com finds that price is the most important issue for car insurance shoppers, they and the attorneys at Murray & Guari Trial Attorneys strongly suggest that consumers not only look at price, but also the type of coverage they really need. It’s very important that your insurance coverage and insurance company have the ability to pay out when an accident forces you to repair your car, or pay medical bills or legal fees if someone sues you.

If price is important, the best thing a consumer can do is “Shop Around.” Research by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) on auto insurance showed that it’s very easy to have a quote of 700 dollars from one company and up to 3000 dollars from another for the exact same risk.”

Florida law only requires drivers to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Insurance and Property Damage (PD) Insurance. Unfortunately, Florida law does not require drivers to carry Bodily Injury (BI) Insurance for injuries that drivers cause to others and that is why Uninsured Motorist (UM) Insurance is so important (because UM Insurance “stands in the shoes” of the uninsured or underinsured driver to provide the insurance protection you need.

About one (1) out of every three (3) drivers does not carry enough insurance to cover the damages they cause. When you are in a car accident and suffer damages as a result, the law provides that you should be compensated for damages that you have incurred in the past and will likely incur in the future including medical expenses, wage loss, pain and suffering, mental anguish, and loss of the ability to enjoy life; UM Insurance covers you for these damages. If you are injured by an uninsured or underinsured driver and you do not have UM Insurance, you will not likely receive full compensation for your damages.

When your insurance agent or your insurance company tells you that you have “full coverage”, what they really mean is that you have the state-required, minimal coverage to be on the road. We encourage you to check your policy and make sure you have UM Insurance. Do not rely on your insurance agent or your insurance company to tell you that you do not need UM Insurance if you have your own health insurance. UM Insurance covers much more than just medical expenses that your health insurance covers. Car insurance companies do not want you to have UM Insurance because, if sued, they become a named defendant in a lawsuit.
