As summer winds down, excitement is building for students, parents, and educators across Palm Beach County! The 2025-2026 school year for public schools officially kicks off on Monday, August 11, 2025. We extend a warm welcome back to all students, teachers, and school staff – we hope you have a safe, successful, and inspiring year ahead.
With the return to school comes a significant increase in pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic around our neighborhoods and school zones. This annual shift requires heightened vigilance from every driver on the road.
Drivers, your role in keeping our children safe is paramount. Please remember to:
Slow Down: Always adhere to posted speed limits in school zones, which are typically much lower. Reduced speeds give you more time to react to unexpected movements from children.
Be Alert for Pedestrians and Bicyclists: Children can be unpredictable. Watch carefully for kids walking or biking to school, especially at crosswalks, intersections, and near bus stops.
Stop for School Buses: Florida law requires drivers to stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended. This applies to traffic traveling in both directions, unless there’s a raised median or physical barrier separating the lanes. Never pass a stopped school bus while children are boarding or exiting.
Avoid Distractions: Put away your phone, food, and other distractions. Your full attention is needed when driving near schools.
Obey Crossing Guards: Always follow the instructions of school crossing guards. They are there to ensure the safety of our children crossing busy streets.
Let’s all do our part to ensure a safe and successful start to the new school year. By driving carefully and being aware of our surroundings, we can help protect the most vulnerable members of our community. Welcome back, Students!
